Phishing Scam on Federal Tax Deposits

The IRS does NOT send out e-mails advising you that your EFTPS payment has been rejected. If you get an e-mail, it is someone trying to trick you into revealing your bank info. You might see:
“Your Federal Tax Payment ID: 96863768 has been rejected.
Return Reason Code R21 - The identification number used in the Company Identification Field is not valid.
Please, check the information and refer to Code R21 to get details about your company payment:”

bogus url given with "eftpsgovservice" in the address

If you receive a message claiming to be from the IRS or EFTPS, please do not reply to the sender, access links on the site or submit any information to them. Forward the message immediately to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.

QuickBooks file to the IRS?

The IRS bought the program QuickBooks for some of its agents—what a boon, now they can ask for your entire QuickBooks file when they’re auditing.

Tax Buddha T-Shirts

I’ve now got a “shop” on Café Press at www.cafepress.com/TaxBuddha in case you’d like to order your own Tax Buddha logo items. I’m also promoting a new slogan for Enrolled Agents:
“Got Taxes? Enrolled Agents Save You!” (I recommend the White text on a Black shirt—that’s the seemingly blank design—it’s white text on a white field!) Of course, the IRS may change the name, so perhaps this will be a collector’s item soon!

The Eightfold Path to Pay Less Tax and Avoid an Audit

Eight basic things business owners want to know printed in booklet form in “Executive Summary” form. This is ten years of working with the IRS Tax Code distilled down so it doesn’t take YOU ten years.

Just another way we’re trying to simplify your life. And the purchase is tax deductible!

You can order from Amazon.com. Here’s the link to Amazon:

The booklet also contains a sections on how returns are selected for audit, when to seek professional help, and how long to keep your tax records.

EBAEA—Speaker Development Group

I’m tired of going to see boring speakers for my continuing education requirements. September 3rd, we had our second meeting of our Speaker Development group, this time in Moraga. We’re trying to encourage and develop quality speakers, specifically about tax topics. Although we’re open to visitors, if you’re not trying to develop speaking skills and have an interest in tax, it may not be for you. At the September meeting, I got feedback on a segment of my presentation to be given in Albuquerque which boils down to remembering “beginners mind” when trying to explain basis. There was also a very kind suggestion of having a “road trip” out to New Mexico. Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 22nd.
